Ivan Shushkin the Most Famous Russian Painter

These are the results of a survey conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center.

According to a survey conducted by the RPORC in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of Ivan Aivazovsky’s birth,

the famous seascape painter turned out to be the third most well-known Russian painter.

Aivazovsky’s name, without any prompting, was said by 24% of those surveyed.

The most famous Russian painter in this survey was Ivan Shushkin, he was named by 32% of Russians.

In second place was Ilya Repin (29%).

Other painters named were Victor Vasnetsov (17%),

Ilya Glazunov and Valentin Serov (8%),

Isaac Levitan and Vasily Surikov (7%),

Kazimir Malevich (6%),

and Alexei Savrasov (4%).

Meanwhile, Russians were most impressed by the works of Aivazovsky (27%),

followed by Shushkin (26%), and Repin (16%).

34% of those surveyed had never been to a gallery or exhibition,

50% had visited a gallery or exhibition over a year ago.
