Developing the Acropolis Digital Museum

The Acropolis Museum has set as its goal the design of its appearance

based on the needs of society today since and before the beginning of its operation.

In the three years of functioning it has made important attempts to address

a wide audience, to cultivate a fertile dialogue with different social, age,

cultural groups and of other kinds, and to deal with the visitor not as

an passive receiver but as an active and demanding interlocutor.

Until today the Museum has had more than 4.500.000 natural visitors.

The Museum, acknowledging the possibilities that modern science offers,

is already taking advantage of its three-dimensional reality hall and of

the lobby of the Parthenon hall for screenings which include matters

regarding its collection. Realising the need for a more dynamic presence

in the new international technological environment, the museum focuses

its interest in the creative utilisation of digital, multimedia and internet technologies,

which will be integrated in all its activities and functions.

The project “Development of the Acropolis Digital Museum”,

which was approved by the Attica Region, has a 1.743.820,82 euro

budget and aims to the development of a multidimensional website

for the Museum of Acropolis that will include:

*Information about the Museum and the organising of a visitation.

*Presentation of the Museum’s 10.000 objects collection,

from the Collection’s Management System.

*An online virtual Museum where the visitor can plan his visit according

to his own interests, create a personal collection of favourite exhibits,

or interact with one of the interactive multimedia applications which

will be created for usage in the physical space of the museum as much as online.

*A separate website for its Children’s Club, through which the children

can browse through the Museum and gain knowledge on ancient

Greek civilisation while playing interactive and entertaining games.

At the same time 24 interactive and online digital applications will be

developed in two languages (Greek and English), a commission and installation

will be made of the necessary equipment for the presentation and support

of said applications in the physical space of the Museum.

Finally, the project also includes the development of an application

for the management of these multimedia apps (back office) by the Museum’s staff.

Taking into account the international trends, the Museum emphasises on the

organising of its cultural content, the development of an efficient

system of its collection’s verification and management, the insurance

of smooth access to the archeological material, the projection of

the Museum and its activities’, the increase of its physical and online visitations which,

in the difficult economic circumstances Greece is dealing with,

may contribute to the reinforcement of tourism and economy in general.
